Gold Buffalo CoinsIn 2005 the U.S. Congress authorized the Gold Buffalo Coin program to create an American gold coin that could compete in a global market. The 2006 Gold Buffalo coin was the first 24k gold one ounce gold bullion coin ever struck by the U.S. Mint. ![]() The Gold Buffalo bullion coins were first released in middle of 2006 to the American through the United States Mint and via a network of rare coin and precious metals dealers. They have become one of the most popular gold coins in the world. Since 2006, Gold Buffalo bullion coins have been minted only in a one ounce weight with a face value of $50. They were struck in mint state condition and from 2006 through 2008 in proof condition. The mint state coins are gorgeous coins struck with a flat finish. The Gold Buffalo proof coins have an attractive highly reflective cameo mirror finish. This is achieved by striking a specially burnished blank multiple times with a die that has been sandblasted to add texture. The final result is a softly frosted raised design that seems to float above a highly polished background. Gold Buffalo proof coins were available in only the one ounce weight until 2008, when the Mint also issued proof coins in half ounce, quarter ounce and tenth ounce fractional weights, with face values of $25, $10 and $5, respectively. Also in 2008, the U.S. Mint released the collectible Uncirculated Gold Buffalo bullion coin, struck on burnished blanks and available in one ounce, half ounce, quarter ounce and tenth ounce fractional weights. Although all Gold Buffalo coins are struck at the West Point Mint, only Uncirculated Gold Buffalos and Gold Buffalo Proofs carry the "W" mint mark. Despite robust sales for the Uncirculated Gold Buffalo, it was discontinued after a single year, causing collectors to sharpen their interest in this unique mintage. In 2009, nine months passed before a single Gold Buffalo bullion coin was released by the U.S. Mint. Then in the last quarter of the year, 200,000 one ounce Gold Buffalos and 40,000 Gold Buffalo proofs flowed into the market, and they were immediately snapped up by investors and collectors eager for the long-awaited coins.
